Case Overview:
A 69 year old woman with a significant history of rheumatoid arthritis in her right elbow went in for a re-revision of a right elbow replacement. There was difficulty removing the cement plug from the humerus because of her history of multiple procedures and amount of cement that was needed to implant the humeral component. Unfortunately during the removal of cement there was a breech of the cortical bone of the humerus and a radial nerve injury occurred. It was a recognized risk of the procedure and the surgeons acted appropriately to repair the injury to the nerve and bone at the time of the surgery. The jury found in favor of the defense.
