Case Overview:
27 year old male presented with abdominal pain after having traveled. An x-ray was performed and they discovered what they thought was bowel obstruction. A CT was done and he was diagnosed with small bowel obstruction in region of ileocecal valve. He had developed gangrene of small intestines and was rushed into surgery to have his bowel resected. Unfortunately, he also had sepsis and had issues with his lungs causing acute respiratory distress syndrome and he died. Multiple factors played into his decline. It was a theory that he had been exposed to bacteria contaminated water during his travels and became progressively worse once he returned home. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could have done to prevent the clots in his intestinal and respiratory circulation. The jury found in favor of the defense.
